Early Morning Commute

The other day while driving into work I noticed a number of contrails. Judging by the time and the altitude, they look to be flights coming onshore from Asia. Where are they coming from? Where are they going? Are they tired of being on that plane for 12+ hours? The thought makes my 30 minute commute tolerable.

It is the Small Things

I love how Stacia can make bicycle tubes so stylish. This was one of my birthday gifts and very appreciated.

Cinema

We finally saw the last Harry Potter. The movie was ... OK. Having the theater to ourselves (in glorious 100 percent digital) was even better. I did have some sticker shock. $10 a ticket is steep. That's $40 for our family for one movie. And people complain about Netflix raising their price! I believe I am still getting a great deal from them. One just needs to have patience when waiting for new releases, and can't the world stand to have more patience? Last night we watched Thor at home (and stayed up too late). We enjoyed it every bit as much as we would had we seen it in the theater...and we can also watch it with the boys on Friday. All that for 1/2 the price of what we paid at the theater.

What is your preferred way to watch a movie?

Surprise!

Today it was discovered to our surprise that we are the proud new parents of a 3.5 pound 14 inch zucchini from our garden. We are registered at Target for those of you wishing to get any gifts for our new arrival.

You know you are from California if...

...while waiting for In-n-Out you resort to ketchup shooters to stem the hunger.

Build It and Grow

Heber loves going to Lowe's for the Build It and Grow program. Today was a police car. He's done about 8 and will have quite the collection when he's through.

Inheritance

I believe that physical traits, interests and character are something that we inherit to a greater or lesser extent.  This inheritance often spans generations.  During this year's school open house, my son's teacher immediately knew who I was because my son resembles me.  I have a niece who looks a lot like my sister at a similar age.  This similarity is known as "familial resemblance".

Interests are also greatly influenced by those who came before.  My wife is an artist when it comes to knitting and other handwork.  In this she is a kindred spirit to her Grandmother.

I also believe that style is also something that is inherited.  I wear my father's wingtips.  Great shoes that are decades old.  That says something of quality which is hard to find these days.  I also submit for your consideration the exhibit below of two "bow tie bros".  Like Grandfather...like Grandson...

Jim circa 1950's.
Heber circa 2010.
